Selfish.
I have been teaching my kids the meaning of this word this week. I tell them that it is selfish to not share your toys. It is selfish when you hog the computer and don't give your brother a turn. It is selfish to think only of yourself and not what would be kind to others.
I encourage my boys to think before they act. To ask themselves how can they be kind to others. I think it's really sinking in to my 3 and 5 year old boys.
For example, I hear Isaac yell on a daily basis, "You are such a selfish!"
Or someone will tattle that their brother is being a selfish because he's ruining a game.
There's only so much a mom can do.
Webster defines the word Selfish as: concerned excessively or exclusively with oneself : seeking or concentrating on one's own advantage, pleasure, or well-being without regard for others.
The Urban dictionary (which I don't always recommend!) defines "selfish" as: "what everyone in the world is. absolutely no one living on this planet can call themselves "not selfish". its human nature. telling someone to not be selfish is like telling someone to stop being human."
Is this true? Maybe?
The Bible says, "Don’t be selfish; don’t try to impress others. Be humble, thinking of others as better than yourselves. Don’t look out only for your own interests, but take an interest in others, too." Philippians 2:3-4.
The next verse says to be like Jesus. He was man. He was unselfish. Though we may never be able to be completely unselfish, it is something we should set as a goal. It is something we should teach our children. I still have hope for this world.
So cool! Do you do a different word every week? If so... keep posting about them... because the rest of us benefit from these as well... even if we already know the word... reminders are good...
